Mesterolone is an oral androgen derived from dihydrotesterone. The molecular weight is 304.5 grams per mole. In the 70s, proviron mesterolone was actively investigated, there were attempts to use the agent for treatment of various forms of depression and related disorders in men. But the substance has not received wide application in this area.

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

The substance compensates for the lack of testosterone in the body. Mesterolone exhibits relatively weak angonogenic properties, practically does not have anabolic activity. Due to the fact that there is no 17-α-alkyl group in the structure of the substance molecule, it is not toxic.

The drug stimulates the development of the genital organs in men, secondary sexual characteristics, has a positive effect on potency and libido. It increases the intensity of the accumulation of proteins in muscle tissue, accelerates bone growth, and has a positive effect on erythropoiesis.
After oral administration, it is well absorbed, metabolized to 1α-methyl-androsterone, metabolites are excreted by the kidneys and with feces. Within a week, up to 93% of the drug is excreted, the half-life is a day.

Indications for use

The medicine is used:

- as a replacement therapy for insufficiency of the function of the gonads;
- to increase efficiency and potency in men;
- with oligospermia, infertility, insufficiency of Leydig cells;
- in patients with aplastic anemia.

Contraindications

Mesterolone is contraindicated to receive:

- in the presence of allergic reactions to the substance;
- patients with prostate cancer;
- with liver tumors, including a history;
- minor patients (with caution — from 16 years).

Side effects

Most often, the drug causes frequent, prolonged and unwanted erections. It is recommended to reduce the dosage or discontinue the drug.

Assign 25 mg of the drug, 1-3 times a day. The duration of treatment is several months.
